
This is looking to the right from the cenotaph at Henri-Chappelle. To the left, one gets the same view. In front of this dizzying field is a sign, with a single letter on it: "A". In the distance - barely visible through the fog - was a second sign, labelled "B".
Photographs like this are nothing new, and they do not compare even slightly to the effect of being there, and knowing that where every white cross presently stands, a soldier could have been standing instead. That is a very full parade square.
